Journals of Elias Hicks Blackburn, 1904-1905.

This small group consists of two photostat copies of journals written by Elias Hicks Blackburn. They contain a day-to-day account of his duties as a Patriarch in Loa, Utah. Blackburn traveled much in southern Utah performing Patriarchal blessings, attending meetings and conferences, and giving sermons. The bulk of the journals contain Blackburn's descriptions of his work as a healer as he administered to the sick. The majority of the people he saw had cancer or tumors, while some had typhoid fever or smallpox.

Elias Hicks Blackburn was born on September 17, 1827, in Bedford, Pennsylvania. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo in 1845 and experienced the Mormon exodus of 1846. He spent the next year aiding the families of the Mormon Battalion and in 1849 traveled to Provo, Utah, where he served as Provo's first bishop.
